1. Start with Comfort and Connection

When you feel comfortable, it shows. Choose clothes that allow you to move, cuddle, and sit naturally — especially important for little ones who love to wriggle and play! Your session should feel relaxed and full of love, not stiff or overplanned.

Tip: Avoid anything too tight or itchy, especially for babies and toddlers. Soft, breathable fabrics always photograph best.

2. Keep It Timeless

Trends come and go, but simple, classic pieces never age. Neutral tones — like beige, cream, white, soft brown, grey, or muted pastels — look beautiful on camera and complement every skin tone.

These colours also work perfectly with my studio’s soft, natural lighting and minimal backgrounds, ensuring that you are the focus of every image.

3. Coordinate, Don’t Match

Instead of everyone wearing the exact same colour, try building a palette with 2–3 complementary tones.
For example:

  • Beige, cream, and dusty rose
  • White, soft blue, and taupe
  • Brown, cream, and sage green

Layering different textures (linen, knit, cotton) adds depth and warmth to the images.

Think harmony, not uniformity.

4. Gentle Patterns and Textures

Small patterns, lace, or knitted fabrics add beautiful detail without stealing attention. Avoid large logos, characters, or bold prints — they can dominate the photo and draw focus away from your faces.

5. For Babies and Children

Simple outfits always win: a romper, knitted set, or soft cotton bodysuit. Bare feet and natural tones highlight their sweetness.
If we’re doing a cake smash or milestone shoot, a neutral outfit (or minimal props) helps keep the look timeless.

6. Add a Touch of Personality

Accessories like a hat, cardigan, or scarf can bring variety without needing a full outfit change. For mums-to-be, a flowing dress or shirt that moves with you adds beautiful softness and elegance to maternity photos.

7. Avoid Bright White (Sometimes)

While white looks beautiful, pure bright white can sometimes reflect too strongly under studio lights. Off-white, cream, or ivory often photograph more softly and naturally — especially if we’re shooting on a white background.

8. Plan Ahead

Lay everyone’s outfits out together before the session. Seeing the combination in advance helps you spot clashing tones or textures. If you’re unsure, feel free to send me a quick photo — I’m always happy to help you choose what will look best in your session.

Final Thought

The goal isn’t perfection — it’s connection. The most beautiful photos happen when your family feels relaxed, close, and full of love. The right clothing just helps the emotion shine through.
